“The perfect solution for strands when the weather is at its worst: braids,” says Sasha Quarles, celebrity hairstylist in New York City. “They withstand humidity, rain, and wind, and work with every hair texture.”

Want a Swedish style of your own? Start by parting your hair in the center or on the side, depending on your preference, and then separate your hair into pigtails. Braid each side and secure it with a metal-free, fabric-covered elastic band (this reduces damage done to your ends).

Next, take the braid on your right side and wrap it across the top of your head, using two to three bobby pins to fasten it directly behind your left ear; repeat the steps above with the opposite braid.

Humidity often equates to a horrible hair day, but it doesn’t have to with this casual updo. To pull off this simple, yet stunning high bun, follow Quarles’s lead: Start with dry hair or, if your hair is damp from the shower, apply a leave-in conditioner to damp strands to give spirals structure; then use a diffuser attachment to blow them dry. “If you have texture to your hair it’s best not to fight it; this style works with curly or stick-straight hair,” he says.

Next, he suggests using your fingers to rake hair back into a very high ponytail, securing it with an elastic band. “If you want to add volume to your messy bun, back-comb the ponytail using a boar bristle brush before loosely twisting it around the hair tie,” he adds. Finally, tuck and secure your ends next to the base of your ponytail with a few bobby pins. To prevent high-humidity flyaways from popping up, Quarles recommends slipping on a headband before stepping outside.
